FEMA Emergency Management Institute
The National Incident Management System (NIMS-PDF) provides a systematic, proactive approach to guide departments and agencies at all levels of government, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to work seamlessly to prevent, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents, regardless of cause, size, location, or complexity, in order to reduce the loss of life and property and harm to the environment.
NIMS works hand in hand with the National Response Framework (NRF-PDF). NIMS provides the template for the management of incidents, while the NRF provides the structure and mechanisms for national-level policy for incident management. - FEMA
Incident Command System - ICS is based upon a flexible, scalable response organization providing a common framework within which people can work together effectively. These people may be drawn from multiple agencies that do not routinely work together, and ICS is designed to give standard response and operation procedures to reduce the problems and potential for miscommunication on such incidents. ICS has been summarized as a "first-on-scene" structure, where the first responder of a scene has charge of the scene until the incident has been declared resolved, a superior-ranking responder arrives on scene and seizes command, or the Incident Commander appoints another individual Incident Commander.
The National Integration Center (NIC) Incident Management Systems Integration (IMSI) Division
The Secretary of Homeland Security, through the National Integration Center (NIC), Incident Management Systems Integration (IMSI) Division (formerly known as the NIMS Integration Center), publishes the standards, guidelines, and compliance protocols for determining whether a Federal, State, tribal, or local government has implemented NIMS. Additionally, the Secretary, through the NIC, manages publication and collaboratively, with other departments and agencies, develops standards, guidelines, compliance procedures, and protocols for all aspects of NIMS.
Questions regarding NIMS should be directed to FEMA-NIMS@dhs.gov or 202-646-3850.
In cooperation with your local agency Prepare4 conducts classroom training in English and Spanish
During the first few hours and days after a disaster strikes, emergency services will be overwhelmed, leaving families, neighborhoods and businesses on their own for hours or days.
Local emergency services personnel train and empower citizens to respond to many scenarios that could occur in their own community. CERT instructors teach citizens to take life-saving action to help families, neighbors, businesses and communities get through the first few hours or days when emergency services are overwhelmed.
The training is free but the benefits are invaluable! Classes forming regularly check with your local Emergency Management agency or Fire department.
